3,500 Capacity Football Stadium & 700 Vehicle Parking Garage Initiate Renovation & Renovation for East Campus
Carnegie Mellon University invisioned a new football stadium with a seating capacity for 3,500 spectators combined with a three-story/700 vehicle parking garage and two new dormitories. Mosites’ responsibilities included stadium and parking garage construction, site concrete, dormitory foundations, and building structure. Carnegie Mellon University designated Gesling Stadium, the parking garage and two new dormitories as the first major phase of its ten year master plan for the renovation and redesign of east campus. The start of the University’s fall semester classes and their football season set the schedule milestones for this project.
The proximity of the site to a major city thoroughfare as well as expansive soil conditions presented challenges throughout the foundation phase of the project. An aggressive management plan was required. Mosites completely isolated the site with fencing, constructed shoring immediately adjacent to the roadway, managed traffic control, and selectively placed engineered fill to support slabs, fields, and parking areas to ensure progress throughout the winter and early spring.
Mosites Construction’s expertise in coordinating erection of precast and structural steel proved essential in meeting the scheduled completion date. Mosites delivered Gesling Stadium, the parking garage, and dormitory structure to Carnegie Mellon University on time, as promised.
