The rehabilitation of the Roberto Clemente (Sixth Street) Bridge restored and modernized one of Pittsburgh’s most iconic transportation structures while preserving its historic character and cultural significance. Originally constructed in 1928, the bridge serves as a critical connection between Downtown Pittsburgh and the North Shore and is part of the nationally recognized Three Sisters Bridges, the world’s only trio of identical self-anchored suspension bridges.

Beginning in February 2022, the rehabilitation focused on improving structural integrity, safety, and long-term performance while maintaining the bridge’s historic identity. Scope included replacement of the concrete bridge deck, expansion dams, sidewalks, stairs to the Three Rivers Heritage Trail, navigational lighting, utility lines, and the steel tie-down system, along with extensive superstructure steel repairs. The bridge and handrails were repainted in Aztec Gold, and upgraded lighting systems were installed to reflect the bridge’s original 1920s appearance.

The project required detailed coordination within a highly visible urban environment adjacent to active pedestrian corridors, sporting venues, river traffic, and Downtown Pittsburgh roadways. The completed rehabilitation received multiple industry awards, including the 2023 Association for Bridge Construction & Design Outstanding Rehabilitation Bridge Award and the 2023 American Society of Civil Engineers Civil Engineering Achievement Award.
