Founded in 1959 by brothers Steve and Don Mosites, Mosites traces its roots to the journey of their father, Moshos George Mosites, whose determination and work ethic laid the foundation for the company we are today. Built on perseverance and a belief in opportunity, his story continues to inspire the values and work ethic that guide our company.
Born Moshos George Mosites in 1896 in a small Greek village along the Black Sea, he came from a long lineage of fishermen and sailors, a life that seemed already set before him. As a teenager, he worked on the water, but his ambitions reached far beyond the horizon. At just 17, in pursuit of a better life and greater opportunity, he set sail for America, arriving in Pittsburgh in 1917 and beginning a true American dream story that would shape generations to come.
In the mid-1950s, M.G. welcomed his son, Steven T. Mosites, into the business. Before entering the construction industry, both Steven and his brother Donald earned degrees in civil engineering from the University of Pittsburgh at M.G.’s insistence, establishing a strong technical foundation that would shape their approach to building. While gaining firsthand experience under their father’s leadership, Steven recognized growing opportunities within the general construction industry. In 1959, he founded Mosites Construction Company, establishing a new path built on the values and work ethic instilled by M.G. One year later, Donald joined the company, further strengthening its leadership and direction.
Over time, the company grew to maintain a formidable presence in both the Heavy Highway and Commercial Building construction markets offering a full range of services, including preconstruction, design-build, construction management, and general contracting. In 1969, the brothers founded Mosites Development Company to support property development and management, further strengthening the company’s impact across Western Pennsylvania.
Under the leadership of Board Chair and Building Division President, M. Dean Mosites, as well as Heavy Highway Division President, Brian J. Gilkey, Mosites Construction Company has grown into one of the leading construction firms in the Greater Pittsburgh region, delivering high-quality projects across Western Pennsylvania and the tri-state area, from bridges to universities, high-rises to tunnels and liturgical spaces to infrastructure. Today, that legacy continues through the next generation including a board and ownership structure composed entirely of members of the Mosites family as well as a critical leadership team composed of some of the brightest minds and biggest hearts the Pittsburgh business community has to offer. As the third generation of company leadership takes shape, it will do so with Steve and Don’s grandchildren as well as many other multi-generational families with Mosites, a place where each member of the team is a part of its legacy.
For over 67 years, Mosites has delivered legacy-driven construction leadership for leading institutions, public agencies, nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations, and private clients across the region. That experience has built a reputation grounded in quality, integrity, and dependable service, recognized through industry awards across both our building and heavy highway work, as well as the lasting relationships we’ve built along the way.
When Moshos George Mosites set sail for America over a century ago, he could not have known the tremendous impact he would have on generations to come.
His sons and grandchildren have built Mosites Construction Company into one of the leading construction firms in the Greater Pittsburgh region, delivering high-quality, award-winning projects across Western Pennsylvania and the tri-state area.
