The rehabilitation of the George Rankin Jr. Memorial Bridge for the Allegheny County Department of Public Works restored and modernized a critical transportation crossing carrying traffic over the Monongahela River between Rankin, Whitaker, and Munhall. Originally opened in 1951, the four lane, 12 span, 2,400-foot steel cantilever spandrel braced deck arch structure represents a significant example of mid-century steel bridge engineering utilizing riveted construction, deck trusses, and girder type approach spans.

The complex rehabilitation focused on extending the service life of the structure while improving long term safety, traffic operations, and structural performance. Work included full deck replacement, lane widening, expansion dam replacement, repair of deteriorated steel and concrete components, truss gusset plate replacement, truss strengthening, rocker bearing retrofits, and replacement of two girders throughout the structure.

Additional work included widening of the abutments and wing walls utilizing caissons and tie back anchors to accommodate the wider bridge deck configuration. The project required detailed sequencing and coordination to safely execute structural rehabilitation activities on a heavily traveled bridge within a constrained urban and riverfront environment while maintaining quality, schedule, and public safety throughout construction.
