The Monongahela Incline Rehabilitation project restored and modernized one of Pittsburgh’s most iconic historic transportation assets. The Monongahela Incline transports passengers between Pittsburgh’s South Side and Mt. Washington on a 635-foot ride up a 35-degree grade, serving thousands of residents and visitors each year.

Completed in two phases, the project included replacement of the rails and rail ties, rehabilitation of the lift and drive components, replacement of the hoist cables, renovation of the incline cars, and upgrades to supporting infrastructure. Construction required specialized access and carefully coordinated work along the steep hillside alignment while meeting historic preservation requirements and maintaining a safe environment for workers and the public.

The completed improvements enhanced the safety, reliability, and long-term operation of this National Historic Landmark while preserving a treasured part of Pittsburgh’s transportation history.
