The Carnegie Mellon University Robotics Innovation Center is a 150,000 SF research and academic facility located within the Hazelwood Green redevelopment district along the Monongahela River on the site of a former steel mill. The building supports advanced robotics research and collaboration through flexible project and workspaces, wet labs, workshops, high bay research areas, a motion capture lab, research water tank, drone cage, and associated support and amenity spaces.
Designed with future flexibility as a guiding principle, the facility incorporates modular planning, generous ceiling heights, and building systems capable of supporting evolving research needs and unknown future loads. The project also required coordination with surrounding site improvements and infrastructure development necessary to support the new facility within the larger Hazelwood Green redevelopment.
