The Greenfield Bridge Reconstruction project for the City of Pittsburgh replaced a critical transportation connection between Greenfield and Schenley Park with a modern steel arch structure designed to improve long-term safety, durability, and traffic operations while preserving the historic character of the corridor. Completed in 2018, the project required extensive coordination within a dense urban environment adjacent to active park space, steep terrain, rail infrastructure, and I-376. 

One of the project’s most significant milestones was the demolition of the existing bridge spanning directly over I-376. The operation required months of planning and coordination with the City of Pittsburgh, PennDOT, emergency responders, and other stakeholders to safely execute a series of full highway closures. Crews systematically dismantled and removed the structure above one of the region’s busiest transportation corridors, utilizing specialized demolition equipment and carefully sequenced operations to protect adjacent infrastructure and maintain the aggressive project schedule. 

Following demolition, construction activities included foundation and substructure work, mass concrete placements, steel arch erection, roadway and utility improvements, retaining walls, drainage infrastructure, pedestrian accommodations, and restoration work associated with the surrounding park environment. The project featured innovative mass concrete substructure elements that required highly precise construction tolerances to ensure proper placement and fitment of the fabricated steel arch structure during erection activities. 

Detailed planning and coordination were critical throughout construction to maintain schedule milestones and minimize impacts to surrounding transportation corridors, park users, and the traveling public.
