Section 55A1 of Pittsburgh’s Southern Beltway for the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission included construction of six mainline bridges and one two span overpass as part of the region’s major transportation expansion initiative. The work featured a pair of three span concrete girder bridges carrying mainline SR 576 over Raccoon Creek and required approximately 1,500 CY of concrete to construct the four pier caps.
The project involved extensive coordination between structural bridge operations, excavation activities, earthwork, and roadway construction within a demanding schedule and active heavy civil environment. Detailed sequencing allowed structural and excavation work to progress simultaneously while maintaining production and schedule milestones across multiple work areas.
Construction activities included foundation work, concrete substructure construction, girder erection, deck placement, approach work, drainage infrastructure, and coordination of large-scale material and equipment operations throughout the corridor. The project required careful planning to safely manage multiple crews, heavy equipment, and concurrent operations while maintaining quality and schedule performance across this critical transportation improvement project.
